Stainless and Ferric Chloride
I'm working on a knife that is 1075 and will have a 440C slotted guard. I'm planning on etching with Ferric. I'm not entirely sure what the impact will be on the guard. Ideally, I'd like it darkened as well, but I thought I'd throw it out to the masters out for some direction.
Thanks, Dan __________________ Dan Hargrove Too many interests, and not enough time! |

If you want the guard etched and darkened, why aren?t you using 1075. That way it match?s perfect. Your never going to get the 440c to etch the same.
As a test, take a small chunk of the 440 and put it in the ferric as a sample befor you spend a lot of time fitting the guard. Erik |

if you want the guard dark don't use stainless. carbon steel, or wrought iron. then bluing method of choice. ive had luck using cold blue. clean metal well, paper towel soaked and rub parts till dark black. let dry and sit for a few min. then wipe down with denatured alcohol. apply liberal coat of WD-40, and check on next day. wipe down with WD-40 again.
if you want the 440 guard to stay shiny, don't get it in the ferric. etch blade before adding guard, or mask the guard off with a bright colored nail polish. use tooth pick to paint around the seam for a nice clean line. hope this helps. |

And that's exactly why I asked. Good options to consider from both of you. Thanks!
