Take-down bowie w/ amboyna burl

Ed, yes........I finally did it..............made a take down (***hanging my head in shame***) ) You can slap me next time I see you.

This is my last one for the year. A take-down bowie with some really cool (I think so anyway ) amboyna burl. This one I will probably take to a show in a few weeks.

Specs:
Forged from 1075 steel, clay quenched
13 1/4" overall, 8 1/2" blade, .220 thick at the ricasso
Guard, spacers and collars are carbon fiber
Handle is stabilized amboyna burl
Blued steel finial nut

All comments and discussion welcome.

I love the black fittings.
Nice job on the take-down.

Hey John. Another beauty. Question? I'm haveing a hard time keeping my guards symetrical. Do you use a template? Or are you just a good freehand drawer?
Kevin.

Hi Kevin. I am a TERRIBLE freehand drawer. Maybe the worst ever.

So templates it is. How I made this one is probably more complicated than it should be, but I maybe over think things.

I start by using 1/4" grid drafting paper. I draw a rectangle box the overall dimensions of my guard. I have a grid line that is exactly in the center in both the vertical and horizontal planes. My ricasso is not dead center in the guard on this knife. It's shifted to the top so that the top quillion of the guard is a little shorter than the bottom quillion. So the shapes will be a little different.

Anyway, I draw the shape of the guard I want, the best and most even as I can, in the box. Then whatever 1/4 quadrant of the box has the most pleasing lines, I cut that out. Then I redraw the horizontal/vertical lines and use that 1/4 of the pattern to make all 4 new quadrants.....so they are all the same. Here's where I will adjust the top and bottom a little for the different length quillions. Then I have a full guard pattern that is symmetrical. Then I cut the whole thing out carefully and transfer that onto a harder, more rigid pattern. I like thin g-10 for this.

I usually make two full g-10 patterns. One I keep whole, the other i cut in half the long way and cut half the width of my ricasso out of it. That way, I can place the half pattern around the ricasso when my actual guard is on the knife. I can flip it to either side and make sure that both sides of the guard match the half pattern perfectly. I can also double check the symmetry with the whole pattern.

I hope this makes sense and feel free to ask if it doesn't.
