Beveling Lessons!
Y'all,
I E-mailed another knife maker I found in Dallas county and he said: "He would be happy to show me how to bevel"! Wow! And he said: {and get this Ray..."} "I have always done my beveling by hand only, no jigs!" Now I don't know if he uses a file or machine but I'll find out and I'll have hands on instruction. He even refused to take money for the lessons! Hey! I'm going to just pin a hundred to his cork board when he ain't looking and give him 10 Lbs of my fresh onions too! This is valuable information to me. This beveling lesson is the last missing skill to making salable knives and I am very appreciative. So I told him give me two more weeks till my next disability check comes and I'll contact him and we can set something up when he is in the shop. {It is hot summertime in Texas} I have a good jig which will get the bevel started and it grinds a blade blank perfectly from the edge to the center line scribe mark. I've enough time to make another which grinds higher up, {from below the spine down to the center line} and practice freehand grinding with the edge done so as not to booger it up. And with most of the stock removed, with a blade wedge test jig, blue lay out dye and a scribe freehand is not so scary. It's happening... JacktheKnife |

Free hand really isn't difficult. A couple weeks of practice, after you see it done, and you should be well on your way ...

What Ray said, I've never used a jig for grinding, however I do use a clamp on deal for plunge cuts.
Nevertheless, congrats and I hope you pick up some good tips. |
