Thanks for all of the great input guys. It makes a lot of sense. Although I would love to save for a 2" x 72", I am notorious for jumping into things and making big purchases and then losing focus and getting side tracked into other endeavors. I need a cheaper machine just in case knife making doesn't stick. I think the 2" x 42" will work for me right now. Thanks again!

I have 2 2X72 variable speed grinders in my shop bu always start my students with a sharp new file and a good knifemakers vise. That gives a greater appreciation of what it takes to make a knife. Yeah, i'm old school but at least 2 of my students are now voting members of the Guild. Bob Levine Mentor for the guild.
