Knife Art Forum
Hi all, Since the CKD is expanding its' exposure via advertising in the knife mags, do you think a forum pertaining to the embellishment of custom knives to attract carvers, scrimshanders, engravers, etc. would be worth while? As a full-time engraver/scrimshander I do not make knives but over the years approx. 90% of my work has been custom knife decoration. As it stands right now there is no place for people who decorate knives, as mentioned above, to get together such as the knifemaking community does here at CKD. I feel that such a forum would benefit both knifemakers and knife artists. This directory is hands-down THE BEST! My personal interest in custom knifemaking will keep me here regardless and my money order to support the advertising is on its' way to Jonathan. Thanks, Tim

Hey Tim, and welcome to the forums. Good to have you brother.
Wow, that sounds pretty interesting to me. A knife embellishment forum... h-m-m-m. I like the idea. Let's see what kind of feedback we get. |

Wow. This is on of the best idea's to come up in a while. I'd hope there's enough interest and subsequent traffic, but that new cliche "if you build it, they will come" applies.
Let's get more of a head count. I'm in. Coop |

I like the idea as well. The better the understanding of all the crafts the better the knives will be or should be.

I think that it is a great idea. Being new to knifemaking, I don't "know" any engravers. This forum will let us get to know the engravers and their work, making it easier for us to make the leap to having a knife engraved. Should be good for everyone.

Without a doubt a good idea.
Maybe a few tutorial for us to prove to ourselves that we should send things to the pro's. I would like it just because I could understand the ins and outs of the crafts better and it will help when choosing an engraver or schrimshander. Who knows, maybe we will get several to join up. |

That sounds like a superb idea. I know it takes decades to develop the skills to be a top artist, but I bet there's a ton of knifemakes who would like to pic up a few tips for basic embelishment. I know at least I'd love to see the work and as so much of it is on knives, it's a natural extension.
Brilliant. |

Great Idea Tim!

Thanks guys for the positive feed. I see this type of forum as a place for collectors, knifemakers and embellishers to interact and educate. If you collect, make knives, do file work, metal piercing, engrave, scrim, sculpt, etc., etc., THIS is the place for you to find and share tips, techniques, problem solving and other ways to skin that cat. If a mention of this can go out with the advertising, that would help. A "call all" to the ring so to speak. I will pass the word on my end. There are a few good tutorials out there and many possibilities for more that could be brought in. The opportunity for everyone to benefit is tremendous! To get it launched, basically, starts with the first question. Thanks again, Tim

Now that Tim has made the suggestion, it seems like one of those -smack your forehead and say"of course!"-kind of ideas!
Every time I run across anything interesting in the way of engraving, filework, etc, I save it to a folder called "Knife Decoration Ideas". I imagine it's a subject we all find more than a little interesting. By all means, BRING IT ON! Dennis Yeah Baby! |

Count me in........
Since I make Knives and engrave and since Coop would cut my heart out.....my answer is (Yes). Cutter, Shanders and filers need a home....and what better place than this. I have found over the months this is an easy place to slide your chair to the fire and have a discussion. What does Alex think....
Thanks Coop for letting me know that this thread was here...been busy. Jim Small |
