Blade performance question
hey ya'll,
is it possible to forge a knife which can be bent 90 degrees and return to its true shape? would it keep an edge. i ask because i've been reading some articles on chinese blades and the question popped in my mind. i think this can be done with longer (sword) blades, but what about a knife blade?? |

Heck it's possible to do with a gound blade, I likedemonstrate this one. I show the students an annealed bar of 1/4" x 1" stock and then "flex" it. I takes a set at around 40degrees. Then I flex an annealed strip of steel 1/16" x 1" to 90degrees with little effort and if I am carefull it will come right back to straight.
Forget about the method of manufacture, just make it thin. If you need it to do heavy cutting, make it thin, but wider to increase the mass. If you don't want it to bend when pushed too far- keep pearlite out of it |

In my experience, the price for making a blade that will do that is performance in some area of blade utility. Strength, hardness, edge retention, something.
