Tools.......
Whilst visiting a Kenyan craftsmens co-operativive I couldn't help thinking of you guys and our discussions/arguments about our tools. These guys work with next to nothing and turn out some of the most exquisite carvings I've seen. I hope you enjoy seeing them.....
Vise? What's that? hand tools??? No computers except the brain, nor even a pencil, to lay out the design A nice comfortable seat and bench to work at.....NOT! Seeing how happy people can be with next to nothing really made me think. |

Interesting Marcus. I had been amazed just looking at some of the works of the early 20th century engravers that worked with little or no magnification and all purely hand done.
I also admire the type of carving you depicted in various woods and stone. Impressive to say the least. Peter |

Marcus, congrats on your marriage. Just goes to show you dont need all the bells & whistles to do good work. I understand most Europeans (engravers) dont use power/air or microscope also.
Their work stands for itself. many happy years for you & your bride. Kent |

Marcus..Congraulations on your marriage, hope that you have as many and more of the happy years I am having being wed for 32. Enjoyed seeing the pictures.it is amazing what someone can do with just a few tools. I am asked by people who want to get into engraving, and I tell them..if they are really serious a small bench vise, a couple of machinists hammers, chisels mounted in wood or steel, and a couple of hand gravers...and dedication to keep at it. I hope to see more pictures of Kenya. Keep us posted.

You know I would use the same vise he did but I don't think I'm limber enough anymore. I really appreciate those photos, they put things into perspective quite well.
It's amazing what you can't see looking down at our 144 square inches of space on the bench. __________________ "Tell about things just as they was, they don't need no excuse, Don't touch 'em up like the poets does, 'til they're all too fine for use."--James Whitcomb Riley |
