I got the following from Bethleham Wire Rope Co.
Plow steel would be in the .40% carbon range Improved Plow, .60% Extra Improved Plow .70% Extra, Extra Improved Plow .80% range Further reading and questions got me the understanding 'Extra Extra Improved Plow' topped out at 0.85% C. More carbon causes brittleness in the wire and reduces tensile strength. If wire rope of a given diameter needs more tensile strength than 0.85% C provides, small amounts of other elements are added (vanadium for one, and two others I don't remember) and/or different types of swaging are used to get rid of some of the air in the cable. 'Extra Extra Extra Improved Plow' has no more carbon than the top end amount in 'Extra Extra Improved Plow'. It's increased tensile strength comes from additional elements and swaging, so it is often listed as "Extra Extra Extra Improved Plow Strength", where the others are listed as '... Plow Steel'. No real set proportion. probably about a 1/4 cup into a 3/4 gallon. It'll make a brown soupy water with black crud floating. I usually dump and repeat at least once.
