Anti scale coatings
Hey guys so I have been using brownells ATP coating (first link below) on all my blades before HT unless they go in a foil packet. So with this brownells a lot of the time some of it flakes off in the oven. Well I am getting close to needing to order more and wondering what you guys use? maybe something better? I did a quick search and found a few things (links below) PCB was one from MSC or rosemill.com has it also. The final link has 2 versions of stuff called ESPON-SR and ESPON-HF....any one ever try any of these OR any other ideas???
What I have been using

Dave I couldn't remember the name of the compound I used
The Espon SR was what we used. It was a white paste that we used, possibly a light yellow, but that was 9 years ago. It worked good and I don't remember it flaking unless you bumped it. It is probably a better composition now. It comes off during oil quench on 440C as I remember, same for O1. I used it on D2 quite a bit and my knives could have been finished if they wouldn't warp during HT, but believe me I tried a couple of times and I had to leave 1/16" on the edge or it would wave out on me. That's how some of my 4" blade D2 knives became 2 1/2" blades.lol Also the stuff we used you couldn't thin with water, it is a paste.
Dave the Espon HF looks like a better product, the stuff I used was definitely not pink. Reading the specs it appears to be a better grade of anti-scale. Text them or call and ask if you could have a sample for a couple of knives to see how they work, 10 Kgs. for the SR is a lot of compound and 50 for this stuff is through the roof.

Oh Dave the stuff we had was NOT made in India. I am not certain now that this is the same stuff, unless this company up and fired American workers and moved to India in which case to heck with them, get the MSC stuff.

It isn't political to want to save US jobs, it's common sense.

I have and still use the Brownell's ATP anti scale coating and never had problems with if flaking off in the heat treat oven. I cleaned the blades very well with acetone prior to bushing the coating on and let it fully dry prior to placing in the oven. You can also use alcohol for cleaning instead of acetone.
I t would flake off in the quench oil, but that just made clean up a lot easier.

Me too. A very good product. A jar of it goes a long way and is reasonably priced.
