Remembering Bonanza.....
Here's Hoss and Little Joe. Hoss isn't quite done but getting closer to being finished all the time. Hoss was looking pretty lonely so I made him a companion, Little Joe...
Hoss was hand forged from a piece of 5160. The blade is 16 3/8" long with a total length of around 23" All the fittings on this knife are wrought iron. The handle came from a very large elk rack. Little Joe started out as a piece of 1065. The blade on this knife is 8 1/4" with a total length of 13". I made the guard out of a piece of 1018 and the rest of the fittings are wrought iron. It has a Euro crown stag handle. |

Well done. Almost makes me cry to see them. Seems like all the good old actors are gone now, huh?

Mark, It shouldn't be to tuff to find some wrought iron, its more you need to know what to look for.. Old wagon wheels that were part of a wooden wheel. Anchors and the anchor chain. Look out in front of some folks yards, thats usually a good spot.......

Thanks Ray,
So how would you go about testing it? Lightly sand and look for lengthwise grain pattern? Mark |

Mark, I understand there are a number of different grades of wrought iron. The lesser grade being the wagon wheel. Without really doing anything to it you can sort of see the layered look. Once the host for my web page gets fixed I'll see about taking some pictures of what I have. I had gone fishing a few months back and ate at a restraunt out at the coast and noticed a really old anchor inside. I had seen it before a time or two but this last time it was just obvious that it was WI. It had had some damage done to it and the way it had rusted it looked simular to stalagtites. I prefer using the wagon wheel since it is easier to see the layers....
