air actuated treadle hammer?
Was talking with a fellow blacksmith and we got to BS'n and got to talking about treadle hammers and possibly air actuating one. I've got an inline treadle hammer I build and have wound up using it far more than I thought I would. Anyway, neither of us are getting any younger and both have knees that have seen better days and got to thinking about putting a small air cylinder linked to the foot treadle. Nether of us know much of anything about air cylinder, so, is this feasible? Or a pipe dream? I've got in mind something with about a 1/2" shaft and maybe a 1 1/2" bore about 12" long, able to run off my 3 horse air compressor without working it to death. A foot actuator make it thump and a regulator to adjust how hard it thumps. I primarily use it as a striker, I've got a press and a tire hammer for drawing out.
Any ideas, or where to find information? Thanks |

I know it's not what you are looking for, but is there a way to put a motor on the fly wheel? My brother did that with one and it worked. He used a winch motor, very slow.

I think you are going to need to add a flow control valve to your parts list along with solenoids and micro swathes to shift it. You may be able to get it as a package unit with the cylinder.
As far as information, your nearest fluid power distributor will have an applications engineer to see you get the right parts. John Last edited by jemoran; 12-28-2016 at 08:33 AM. |

Thanks, forgot to mention I was thinking of leaving the springs in place and using a single stage piston and letting the springs return the ram to the up position. I'll check with a few hydraulic shops in the area and see what they can tell me.

I know there is a guy in Kansas who makes air hammers. You might check with the Kansas Knifemakers Association for some pictures.

Thanks, I'll check them out. It probably won't work, but would be a knee saver if it did, just don't know if I can get an air cylinder to function fast enough without too much force.
