What's everyone working on?

It's been really quiet in here lately. Everyone's busy with the holiday season probably. Just wondered what everyone is up to.

I've been really busy and not always with knives. But here are three that I forged out the other night. Got them rough ground and ready to heat treat yesterday. They are for an upcoming show.

The bowie on top is about 8 1/2" of blade.

I can't wait to see what those look like finished.

I'm just contemplating whether or not to sell most of my knifemaking stuff. My motivation is shot. I don't have enough time I can spend practicing, and there's nowhere I can carve off more. I'm working 60-80 hours per week. By the time I get some exercise and spend a little time with my wife, I'm ready to pass out.

Hi John,
Can't wait to see your finished knives, they look great!
I'm currently working on two stock-removal builds.

Nessmuk, from ATS-34 billet... I sent this one to Texas for HT last week.

Drop Point, from CPM154CM precision ground billet... almost ready for HT.

Happy Holidays!

Hey John,

I'm working on a 3-4 chef knives but that's about all. I did manage to get my one commissioned knife to a really good guy who is a jetBlue pilot. It's a good thing I packed the tar out of that knife when I shipped it because the customer said the box was nearly destroyed! Anyhow here the finished knife. The handle was quite a bit bigger than normal as this guy hand huge hands.

I did end up with a decent hamon (doesn't show up in the first pic), John, but think I'll be using the forge from now on.

Dana

I've got several straight blades on the bench, but am waiting on belts so I hopefully don't have to do so much hand finishing.

Most recently I finished up a hunter for the "Knives for Victory Auctions"

, and a Mosaic/Koa hunter.....

And although it's been completed for a bit, just got a "bite" on this folder today! Hope it sells!

I did that once. I wasn't using the equipment so I sold it. A few years later when my schedule changed and the "knife bug" bit again, I had to buy all new equipment...so I ended up paying more than if I had just kept it. Think it over really well before you sell.

The knives look good guys! I've just been working on some low cost edc's.. carbon steel and titanium, I'll snap pics in a day or two. Also trying to find time to get some friction folders done.

Grant- don't be too hasty to sell. The tools won't go bad just sitting there and you may regret it. But if you do sell- sell cheap and when I have money. Just kidding. Sort of.

Rockhound- I like that drop point hunter a lot.

Dana- that looks like a good hamon, especially towards the tip. Got some nice activity going on. And that buckeye looks familiar.

Ed- I like that hunter you made for the auction a lot. Has a nice profile looks like it is a great hunter. And it's unmistakably and "Ed Caffrey" knife.

Grant,

I agree with Aube and John....unless it becomes "necessary", don't sell! It won't go "bad" on the shelf, and believe me.....time goes by quickly, and one day your gona find yourself with more time to do the things you want to do.

Looking back, I've come to understand that when your young....you do what you HAVE to do, and the future seems so far away.....then as you get a bit older, you'll find that you'll get to do the things you WANT to do.

I've got so much to comment on that I don't know where to start.

John
All three are nice, but my personal favorite is #2.

Grant,
Hang on to your tools. I was in the same boat back in 05/06. I now have plenty of time. Trust me, the bug will bite you again!

Rockhound,
I love Nessies. You did good Bro!

Dana,
Cool handle. What is that?

Ed,
Ok Buddy, your stuff is always spot on, but that Damascus on the second knife is really something! I wouldn't lay that down around me if I were you.

Ruger4,
That sheath is different. I like it!

Great job people!!!!

Grant, I agree with the others. That bug done bit and it don't heal. Them tools don't eat nothin so keep'em. Worse case senario, you'll find other uses for them. Not sure what all you have but everybody doing serious work around the house and such needs a grinder from time to time or an anvil to coax those subburn bits, a vice is always good to have. The point is, this may be dedicated for knifemaking but not limited to knifemakeing.

Hey Grant,

That's what I was thinking. Good tools can help an awful lot around the house for other stuff. Besides, forever is kind of a long time. Maybe you only make one more knife, but what if you're handing it to your grandson and he's smiling ear to ear.

Hope you're getting over time pay, buy more tools, Craig

I finished what I had in the works so time to start a new batch. There are 5 more not pictured like the small ones above the straight razor. It's a lot of knives! I'm going to pick half and save the other half for later, mainly because I can't afford the materials to start all of them at once! Most of them are getting silver pins this round.

Dang Eli, you've been busy! Are those leather skivers at the bottom?

It'll probably take me a year to finish them all! I'm setting a goal of Feb 1 for the first half I picked. The two on the bottom are for shop use, hence their simple, ugly design. They are going to be chisel ground. The longer one will be right handed, for cutting out fletches for my arrows. The other will be opposite, for cutting out leather for inlays.
