At first I was thinking alloy banding, but as Crex suggested normally banding occurs with lines and strange patterns. So now I'm thinking, and I didn't see anyone ask this yet, what about possible decarb? Or possibly something else in the HT process? I can't remember what your HT setup is but maybe it's possible that you got some atmospheric action playing here? Maybe? I dunno? Just throwing ideas out.
Eh... edit... I just remembered you do most of your grinding post-HT... so probably not decarb. I dunno, maybe something happened during the HT/Quench where you didn't get a full change over molecular-ly? |

Yes, this blade was ground post HT so decarb shouldn't be it. The HT process was my usual process with no surprises and the blade Rockwelled as expected. Whatever the effect is it is evenly distributed and visible on both sides so it appears to go all the way through without any splotchy areas or any change in size of the dark and light spots.
So far, I haven't been able to find another piece of steel that I can be sure came from the same bar ... |

Definitely doesn't look like typical alloy banding.
Is there any chance your etchant might be contaminated, or the blade was sneezed on right before you stuck it in? __________________ A good friend told me one time about forging "What is there not to like, you get to break all the rules you were told as a kid, don't play with that it is sharp, don't play with fire, and don't beat on that" Wade Holloway See some of my work. |

Never had a "differential" issue in the same bar of O-1. 1095, 1084 and 5160 yes - mostly in 1095. Not saying it can't won't don't in O-1, just haven't seen it. I etch most of my blades in WV just to remove scale as I forge all my blades.
Hope you figure it out Ray, keep us posted. __________________ Carl Rechsteiner, Bladesmith Georgia Custom Knifemakers Guild, Charter Member Knifemakers Guild, voting member Registered Master Artist - GA Council for the Arts C Rex Custom Knives Blade Show Table 6-H |

The vinegar was fresh, just opened the bottle. The blade is 12" long and nearly 3" wide - if I sneezed enough to cover that on both sides my dessicated body would still be on the shop floor ....

I ran this past Kevin Cashen and he said he had no metallurgical explanation for it. For now, this must remain one of knife making's great unsolved mysteries .....

The sneeze thing was funny!
If Cashen has no clue, it may indeed remain a mystery. Another possibility: the blade is possessed! Finally: Aliens. __________________ God bless Texas! Now let's secede!! |

Hey Ray,
Do you mind if I re-post this on an engineering forum? I want to see what some fellers with alphabets behind their names think is going on here. |

Marc,
Go ahead. Jack, Aliens are a possibility for sure but I was thinking Shop Imps ..... |

Right, I've posted this and emailed the photo to some other fellers to try and figure out what is going on here. I'll throw up a link to the post once it's up.
