New Virus -- Watch Out
I've been watching this one, and have not seen a warning, but thought people should be made aware of it.
There is a new security hole in Windows. This one is a big one, and allows code to be run by doing nothing more than looking at an image (either e-mail or web page). Microsoft has said there will be a patch on the 10th of Jan, a very long time after this was announced. More info can be found here http://www.f-secure.com/weblog/#00000761. This is a very bad one guys, watch it if you are running windows. The big thing that gets me, Microsoft coded this "feature" into WMF files (it can appear anywhere, because an image can be named smile.jpg, but really be a wmf file and it will run as such). Be careful out there until your system is secure. --Carl __________________ --Carl N-T Porkin' Pig Price ?? KN Auctions to help a member in need and score a GREAT deal! ?? |

"secure" is a word that no longer applies to the world of computers. There are so many viruses and spyware attacks that it is nearly impossible to keep up. Using a single virus protection program - even the most expensive - will not protect you 100%. You have to be careful with email, cross-scan your system periodically with different anti-virus/spyware programs, and watch for any unusual operating problems (slowdowns, software that stops working, etc.)
I remember an internet expert telling me years ago that the internet mirrors the 'real' world. In the real world, we keep doors locked and money in a vault because the bad guys are everywhere. The same is true of a computer. __________________ God bless Texas! Now let's secede!! |

Yeah, but this time it slipped by the scanners (all of them) because although you kept the doors locked and your money in the vault, Microsoft handed the bad guys the keys and combo.
Not to beat a dead horse, but this one just shows sloppy coding on Microsofts part. They allowed a media file to run an application that has access to the entire system (no sandbox), and as such, is really hard to detect by the system. They then go, and make it so this automatically runs upon seeing the file. --Carl __________________ --Carl N-T Porkin' Pig Price ?? KN Auctions to help a member in need and score a GREAT deal! ?? |
