Stepping it up a notch!
Woohoo!
For those of you that beared with me while I was having knife maker's block, thank you. And thank you for your support... Now on with the show!!! Here's two that turned out real nice. The first one was an order. The customer drew up a wharncliff that I then altered the image into a "working knife". Blade steel is 1095 that I clay hardened. The hamon turned out descent. Not quite as lively as I was hoping but still nice. The handle is Stabilized Pencil line Spalted Maple Burl Scales that I bought from our own David Peterson. Thanks again! The knife is 9 1/8 inches overall and has a 5 inch blade. The spine I file-worked with a pattern that I haven't done before. (pretty cool ) Now this is going to be going off to Paul Long to have a sheath made for it. Then it will be off to it's new owner. Here's the next one... This one, turned out better than I had imagined! The overall design was actually an attempt at designing a working folder. The design was flawed as a folder, but it makes a great fixed blade! The blade steel is, again, 1095 that I clay hardened. I tried to not etch this one too much. The handle is waterbuffalo horn that is held on with mosaic pins. (they didn't show up in the picture) Now here is where it gets interesting... I took a lesson from another friend, Antonio Monetjano. A while ago he posted his "Deluxe Hand Carved" knife. You might remember it. It was one of those knives that was just spectacular! Anyways, he showed how he inlayed coral into the spine of the knife. I thought I'd give it a shot. So, I inlayed Abalone and mildly file-worked the spine. The file-work was then filled with epoxy so the spine would be glassy smooth. I'm thinking about doing some flutting on the handle as well, however, I'm kind of scared to. The knife is 7 3/8 inches overall and has a 3 1/4 inch blade. This one as well, is going off to Paul to have a sheath made. This one has no owner.... yet?! I hope you guys like these. It's good to be "back in the saddle again"! Chris Nilluka |
