etching problems

I etched my first blade today using ferric chloride & TSP, washed with warm soapy water, dried, and sanded w/ 1200 grit sandpaper. Nothing. No temper line. I edge quenched the O-1 blade three times and tempered it two hours at 400 degrees. (Twice for an hour each) What did I do wrong? I destroyed the knife testing it. It bent about 45 degrees before breaking, but the grain looked silky to me, but I have an untrained eye. Will O-1 show a temper line? I made a knife out of 1095 that showed a temper line without etching (if you looked at it just right). What should I expect to see?

I do not work a lot with blades that are differencially heat treated and displaying a nice temper line. I have done some 1095 blades as you said the line was there with no treatment or any thing. I have done one 01 blade that showed a nice line as well without treatment. As I do not do my own heat treatment I would have to refer you to my heat treater and see if he could help.

The guys here are real sharp and should be able to help you out. If not drop me a line.
