Crex, I am in High Point. I would love to come but my wife is having one of her "girls" weekends at the coast so I am teaching my girls to make a knife. I have one daughter that wants to make a knife. She seems to really intested in what I do in the worksop.

I've never used backing or liner material. I've seen it on knives, but don't know much about it. I sent a couple of pieces away to be stabilized, but I didn't really like how it looked when it came back. This stuff is so hard naturally (after sitting in my basement for a couple of years) that you can't dent or scratch it. It's so dense that it sinks in water!

Mik load the girls up and bring them. I've had a lot of youngsters try forging and making their first blades at TR. The younger ones don't hit too hard and actually do better in the finishing stages of smithing a blade. I always have a short stump anvil on hand for the shorter folks.
