frame handle material ?

What steel do you use for your frames when making a frame handle? I was thinking of using 416 but have not been able to find 1/2" thick 416 flat stock. Is using cold rolled or hot rolled steel acceptable or a good idea?
Thanks
Steve

Hi Steve!

1/2" is awefully thick for a frame handle.....generally I try to make the handle frame the same or less then the thickest portion of the blade. Hot or Cold rolled works fine. I tend to choose the frame material based on what I want to do with the handle..... 416 is best for engraving, cold/hot roll is good if I'm carving/texturing and/or bluing. I've also combined materials in handle frames (bronze, Nickel silver, or stainless in a "sandwich" configuration) to match the rest of the hardware I use.

Ed
I am trying to do an integral handle using my mill. So the overall width of the handle will be 1/2" with the spine of the handle approx. 1/8". If I use the cold rolled is there anything I need to do to the handle to try and stop it from rusting or will sanding it to 1000 grit work?
Thanks
Steve

Hmmmm. My first thought to protect cold/hot roll would be Gun Kote. I've been using it with great success for a couple of years now. You can get a bunch of different colors, and both gloss and satin clear. I've been using the clear satin on my damascus pens, and have been very impressed with how well it holds up (don't tell anyone, but I've done Mosaic blades with the satin clear, and nobody can tell the difference)
