If I'm using a threaded barrel type pivot, I grind the length so that it is flush with each liner. (everything in together on the folder, except the handle material is not in palce). If I'm using a pivot with a head on one end, I put the handle materail on that side, insert the pivot, and grind it flush with the other liner. I always counterbore for the pivot screw heads (and/or the pivot head).

I do the same as Ed. If your other screw is to long, just tap a scrap piece of steel and screw it through and grind off what sticks out the other side to what ever length you need.

Thanks guys for the promp reply.

Ihave never made a folding knife hence the question on the pins.I was going to make up a plate with a neat hole for the pin then use the surface grinder to remove the last few thous .

Thanks again .

That's exactly the method I use to size all pins and bushings.
