At what point do you HT in folder construction?

At what point do you HT in folder construction?

Do I do it prior to cutting and fitting the lock/stop pin? Seems like i need to have the detent there, which would mean having the lock already done, but im worried that scale removal in the tang area might affect lock-up......

In my particular case, I heat treat the blade before I do anything concerning the lock. That way, I do the surface grinding and clean the steel to it's final thickness before I fool around with the lock or the spacer thickness at all. Then, I grind the notch in the blade and use that to tell me where to cut the lock. After the lock is cut and mating well with the blade THEN I set the stop pin.....

It may turn out fine, depends on the heat treat. Some steels in some heat treat processes get a little discororation and that'a about it. Clean it up and you're ready to go. Other steels and other processes may get some scale and light pitting. By the time that gets cleaned up the blade probably wouldn't fit up any longer ....

The problem with cutting the lock before heat treat is that you will get some wear on the lock face on the tang. You will also change the lockup when you clean up that area, and if you take too much off your lock travels over too far to the right! If you don't use an undersize dummy pivot you will also get pivot wear and slop as you assemble and re-assemble the knife a hundred times or more.

I always use a full backbar, it's the New England style of knifemaking. I install and set the blade to the backbar before I cut he lock. Cutting the lock is one of the last things that I do. I also cut the lock to fit the blade. Some makers grind the blade to fit the lock.

Come talk to me at the Marlborough NCCA knife show on Nov 20th.

I heat treat before I do any work on nthe blade at all. I cut an oversize blade, heat treat and do the rerst including lock notch, detent hole, thumg stud screw hole, and bevels. All holes are done with carbide bits of course. Frank
