OK I'm gonna buy a drill press, input request
OK i've been off gunsmithing but here soon i'm gonna be back making pocket and straight knives. (Gotta have the guns shooting good then i can cut up the meat). i'm comparing the Grizzly 12 speed benchtop press to the 16 speed harbor freight benchtop. I work all the usual Ti, stainless steel, mild steel, and wood materials. I'm leaning towards the harbor freight because i don't have to pay shipping. I want to know from you folks, which one do you own, do you like it, or which one you have that for ~~ $200.00 can get teh job done. I've been lookin' for a used one in the local area and can't find one, and don't want to pay shipping if i got one off of ebay. I know i should look into getting the jacob's chuck for whichever one i go off and get. my current drill press spins to fast for Ti and it would cost to much to slow it down. I've almost accepted that i need a newer and slower machine. Thank you Thank you for your input, comments, advice, and 0.02 woth, its appreciated.

Hopefully Ray Rogers will chime in. I think he has one of those Grizzly drill presses and likes it. I think that would be the way to go over say a Harbor freight one. I have a HF model and its accuracy isnt quite up to par. Spend the money now and get a nice one instead of paying later in headaches. I use my HF one for not so important drilling.
Grizzly should work fine for you. Good luck Shane |

Yes, I have been very happy with my Grizzly 12 speed. At the time I bought mine, a friend bought a HF 12-speed that looked identical but cost less. His was much heavier, a fact I attributed to the weaker cast iron they used at the time, they used more of it to get decent strength. That aside, his had far more run out that mine did. BTW, I have been very pleased with the Grizzly chucks (I have them on my mill, lathe, and the drill press) and see no need to change to anything else....

I have big ones and small ones.
Mostly I use the small ones from the pawnshop(about 30 bucks each) Most are "about" the same in quality, the chuck makes the difference. I payed 75 bucks for a standup model about a month ago, nice one. I bought one new for several hundred bucks and see no clear advantage by being new. As long as they were taken care of and not rusted up, used is cheaper. Just a thought from the Toolman Beblessed, |
