thumb disc - how?
Hi,
I'm working on my own linerlock right now and I'd like to put a thumb disc on it. I can't decide what type of metal to use on the disc, but that shouldn't be too hard. I can easily fashion a circle out of any sort of metal, my problem comes in putting some sort of checkering on the disc. An example: This is one of ray roger's knives... How is it made? The only two ideas I have are: 1.) use a triangle (not sure of the right term) file, and guestimate with spacing, or 2.) attempt it with a checkering file, but since it's round this won't work well. Thanks for the help. -Brian- P.S. Mr Robinson- I finally ordered the stuff I need. You should be seeing a new barlow in the next month or so. Last edited by Jaegar; 09-02-2005 at 10:34 AM. |

if you have a dremel type tool. you can use the cut off disc attachment to make the checkering. it will be a bit rough but it works.
give it a try on some scrap first and see if you like the way it comes out. here are a few pics of some that ive done with a dremel type rotary tool. the look is a bit rough but it grabs the thum very well much better then most factory checkering. its like velcro for skin! ...justin |

The disc on my knife was purchased already made from either Halpern or Shefield's. The checkering on the edges is done on a lathe with a knurling tool.....

Thanks Mr. Rogers and Justice...
I heard on another forum that Halpern used to carry them, but no more. I'll check with sheffield. Justice, that never occured to me... I like that, and think I'll try some on scrap. BTW, did you make the second knife, or was it a kit/modified store-bought? I ask because of the lock assembly. As you can see from another thread, I'm interested in locks like that. Thanks, -Brian- |

Brian glad i could help
its a factory made knife by cold steel called "recon 1". then i did some modifacations to it. i did see the other thredd you started. and i ythink your best bet is to take an existing arc/axis locking knife and strip it down and get to know it better. then use it as a template to copy the lock style. the cold steel recon 1 goes for about $50. thought its not as good as benchmades lock it might give you some insite. .....justin |

Update:
Searched sheffield as Mr. Rogers suggested and they have them for $8.50/10. I'm going to purchase them there, to make it easier. I was pretty sure it was factory.... Yep, when I have the money I'll buy a cheap one to tear apart. Thanks. -Brian- |
