New forum idea

As a result of several threads in the display case forum, perhaps a forum on historical period blade research might be in order. It would however need some rules on proper behavior posted as sticky thread at the top. I have noticed no small amount of person ego tied to opinions held.

However with a good set of forum rules and a good moderator, it would a very valuable forum to a sizable percentage of knife makers that are using historical blades as inspiration.

Rules would need to cover general behavior of those posting and respect for intellectual property (proper attribution of sources goes a long way here).

I second Scotts idea and his assessment on behavioral protocol.

A research forum dedicated to the knife scholar with contributions based on facts, not fiction.

...So far, 3 new boards.

1.) Sheath Display Case.
2.) The Period Blade Research Forum.
3.) The Business of Knifemaking Forum.

...maybe a 4th?...CKD Boxing Ring?...( no sharp objects allowed)...
...just kidding!...

I nominate Scott and Jon as moderators and rulemakers for the Research Forum.

I would be happy to work with Jon on a historical research forum. From prior posts I feel he and I are often on the same sheet of music.

I would see a historical forum serving three purposes. First it would be a place to gain inspiration for new knives from historic patterns. Next it could serve as jumping off point for additional research for those that would like to study the history of knives. And third it could serve as a way to sort through the myth and misinformation about historic blades.

Posts could be along the lines of........

"I heard of _____ type of knife, but never seen one, what do they look like?"

"What kind of knife is this?"

"What is a good reference for......."

"Check out this book...."

"Saw these in a museum....."

"What type of blades would you find in the ______ period?"

Just a few more thoughts

Having a separate display case for sheaths seems a little redundant to me. One of the things that puts me off some other forums is that there are too many categories to keep track of... why don't folks just post sheath pictures in the Display case? We could just post a definition of what is acceptable in the Display case and include '...knives and directly knife related furniture such as sheaths or fittings..."

Oh and that would be cool, Scott-

One thing that would be interesting for me personally about a historical forum is that I'd be motivated to learn new things. Always a good thing.

I like the idea of the historical knife forum. I'm more than happy to help out there, we already have volunteers to moderate but now we need people to do the work What could be better than researching historical blades?

Jon-
The idea behind the sheath display forum is for those who want to have one place they can go for study and inspiration of sheaths and sheaths alone. Mixed in with the regular display case will make that more difficult as it will be filled with all kinds of items.

Does that make sense. I've got the crud so my head ain't to clear, but I think that says it OK.

Chuck

I'm with you Chuck, A seperate sheath display case would be good. I also think you should be on the historical forum.
