Arrow Victorinox SwissChamp Knife

Hello everyone.

I am doing a project for school about the Victorinox Swiss Army SwissChamp knife.

Does anybody own one of these?

What can you tell me about these knives?

Any experiences using the knives?

What are the good things and the bad things about these knives and their components?

When do you use your SwissChamp, and for what? How long have you owned it?

Any answers to these questions would be great. I'd be very thankful.

Hi,
I've had a champ for a very long time & it spends most of his time in a drawer, it's bulky, & not at all user friendly, my Swiss of choice is the Huntsman (@half the width & 1/3 the tools, but much easier to carry & use)

I have, however, no problems with the quality (which is excellent)

Thanks for that.

All opinions are useful to me, as at the moment the project looks like a commercial for Victorinox - overly complimentary and not very objective.

As with most products, the SwissChamp has its bad points, but its very hard to find out what they are as the only places that there is comment on the SwissChamp on the net is on the Victorinox websites, or on-line shops. Obviously both these situations focus only on the good things - they are trying to sell them, after all.

So, thank you. Any more opinions or comments - good or bad - will be very welcome.

I echo Colins statement, too many tools to be practical, too large to be comfortable. Generally awkward, not my favourite multi-tool by a long margin. It suffers from trying to do too much, and in so doing, fails to do the basics well.

My tool of choice is a leatherman wave.

I've been carrying an SAK for many years. I have had a Swisschamp for several months and carry it in a belt pouch. It's too bulky for pocket carry, at least for me, but in the pouch it's always ready. I'm a plant engineer in a factory, so I always need tools at hand. I've probably repaired and adjusted more machines with my SAK than all of the other tools I have. The phillips screwdriver is the best made. I'd love to have a set made like that. Scissors always come in handy in a textile plant. The magnifying glass is much more important to me as I get older. The pliers have not been as usefull because of their small size, but I have used them on occaision. I must say that I prefer it to a Gerber multitool, which I have carried extensively as well. Quite a useful tool.

Apart from the blades, the two tools on the SC (or any SAK) that I've used the most, are the tweezers & the pin

Swisschamp

I own a SwissChamp, a couple of Leathermen, and a Gerber multi-tool, as well as several other models of the Swiss.

The Champ is in one of my display cases (too bulky to shove into a pocket as I don't wear a belt) the Leatherman is in a kit on my Norco Bigfoot, and the Gerber has a special place in my '67 Toronado. I have a smaller Swiss on my keychain (do not recall model but it's half the width of the 'Champ and black), and another tucked into the first aid kit in my Xterra.

Each has their special place and special purposes. I'm sure the 'Champ is handy for all the gadgets it has, but like others have already said, sometimes too many gadets in one is not always a good thing.

btw. My very first knife was an SAK I found at the garbage dump when I was 5. Still got it, too.

SAKs are great but they are production knives and we don't tend to discuss them much here at the CKD.

Over at Knifeforums Jim Nowka has allowed SAK fanatics a special forum and I count myself one of the fraternity....
