Question blade coatings

what do i use to coat my knife i just made its for outdoor/survival uses. i know that tops uses something called black traction coating and i was looking for somthing simalar but simple at the same time i dont have much access to special tooling but i want to do it on my own. i made my knife out of a 1/4 thick bar of 1095 oh and one other question i used coal to heat treat my blade i heated it to an even non magnetic and then imidietly quenched it in used motor oil then i cleaned off the scale and tempered it at 450-500 for 1 hour its cleaned up now and has an edge and its tough but did i do it wrong? or is there a better way of doing it?thanks Justin

I've used some Teflon Moly coating from Brownells on some of my carbon steel baldes. You just spray it on and then bake at 300F for 30 minutes It's very tough and you can get it in several colors including black and gray. Here's a link to the product:

The heat treat sounds fine. You might try edge quenching next time for an even tougher blade. Use the blue Search button at the top of the page to find threads where we have discussed that in other threads...
