carbon fiber handle shaping
Hello from another rookie,
I took the plunge and bought a dremmel tool, some files and sandpaper. While I'm waiting for my wood scales to arrive from Knifekits, I thought I'd work on an old set of carbonfiber scales. My question is regarding the best atachment for shaping carbon fiber. I like the rough finish insted of the shiny that you see on some knives. How do I achieve the shaping, and retain the "rough" finish? Thanks, Dean |

Dean,
If you want a rougher finish, just don't go into the finer grits of sandpaper and definately don't buff. Most makers will bead blast carbon fiber and G10 for a grippier surface. Good Luck with your kits! Your gonna love them! Bob Sigmon |

Grip, grippier and grippiest! Dean, The dremel will be great for shaping the scales to the liner and basic shaping of the scales to the crown of the bolsters (sandpaper backed by a solid flat piece of steel, whatever is very useful also.) Files can also be used in the rough shaping. As far as what grit? Probably 100 or 220. Just make sure to get the scales to the shape you want and completely finished at a particular grit so that you can judge the feel. It is really up to you. As you use the knife the scales may shine up on their own. Just take your time and have fun! Bob Sigmon |

400 grit is not to finished at all, and has a nice smooth sheen. That's what I like, too. Carbon cuts very quickly with paper and abrasives so go carefully.

Jut thought I'd toss in the perennial reminder...don't forget to wear your respirator! Whether sanding Carbon Fiber or most of the exotic woods, most of the dust from the various handle materials is something to avoid sucking in...
It's safest to wear organic grade masks whenever grinding...your good health is worth the few extra bucks! Dennis Yeah Baby!
