Blade show 2019 Astro Presentation by Gary Clinton

Gary Clinton will be doing a presentation at the Blade knife show in Atlanta on Saturday June 8.
The subject will be the Randall Astro. I'm not at liberty to give details about what Gary is bringing to the show, but as soon as I have more info from Gary, I'll post it here.
For those of you who can't attend, I will give details and provide photos after the show.

Regards, Sam

Wouldn't it be great if someone could make a video of this kind of talk--for those of us who can't make it to BLADE? ...and maybe post the video on YouTube?

I'm not tech savvy Steve, but great idea. May look into that.

I have an update from Gary concerning his Astro presentation at the blade knife show in Atlanta this coming weekend.

"The talk is on Saturday June 8th from 2:15 to 3:30 in room 107. There is no charge to attend and I will be giving a new Astro away to a lucky winner. "

For those of you coming, Gary has some rare early Astros that he is bringing for display. . He's sent a few pics to me. It's going to be a real treat!

Regards, Sam

I would like to thank Gary Clinton for putting together this presentation on the Astro. Gary was approached and asked if, with this being the 50th Anniversary of Man landing on the moon, he would do a presentation. Of course, the Astro was a natural choice.
Gary went thru the chronology of the Mercury space program and covered the information that was presented by Bob Gaddis in his chapter dedicated to the Astro.
Gary also brought a wealth of early Randall Astros for the presentation.
I can't help but think that this gathering of Astros could be a grouping of Early Astros that hasn't been seen in a very long time.
We had 3 Astros that were made and sent to NASA from 1960-1962.
Also present were 2 Scaleless Astros without thong holes. Rounding out the field were 2 brown Micarta Astros, including John Cheeks 1965 Astro.
I will follow up with pictures.

Finally, an early Astro originally sent out without scales surfaces without the thong hole, that is like mine. Thanks Gary for bringing that one. We don't know why they left the shop without lanyard holes. Perhaps it's simply because the customer ordered it that way, as it was meant for display only. Or perhaps these Scaleless Astros without thong holes were sent out to dealers for display. Who knows for sure.
Stay tuned for some more great early Astros. Some you've seen before, but one in a combination I've not seen before.
Regards, Sam

Here is a pic of the Astro gathering with the sheaths. The larger knife at the bottom is a prototype designed for the Gemini program. The green tenite on the top was included in the program because the model 15 Airman was used as the basic design for the Astro.
More pics to follow.
