Time line on A/I - alternate ivory material

Got involved in a bidding frenzy on flea bay over a 1-8 with A/I. Nice piece but I lost interest in the mid 8's since I wanted a specimen not a museum piece. Finished at $1100
Looked at the timeline #3 and didn't see a mention of A/I.
So . . about when did it start/stop and any thoughts as to its overall scarcity?

I had my hat thrown in the ring on that one as well......Late 1988 was when the shop began producing the knives with A/I handle material supplied by Masecraft Co. and discontinued use in June, 1992.

This was briefly discussed in the Delrin line during a discussion of the various materials used as Ivorite.

http://www.knifenetwork.com/forum/ed...tpost&p=487402

Here is what I wrote then, quoting Rick Bowles, who probably would be a most informed source for the question of Alternative Ivory....

Alternative Ivory appeared in the 1990s. Here is Rick Bowles comment about A/I.

"Alternative Ivory has never been offered by the shop. After Westinghouse discontinued their paper micarta known to us as "ivorite", we experimented with several different white colored handle materials including Alternative Ivory. All of them had some drawbacks. The problem with Alternative Ivory is that it looks TOO good. With a butt cap hiding the cross section, it's very difficult for even a professional to tell that it's artificial. This is why when this material is used on a Randall a "AI" is etched next to the trademark.
You can purchase it from Masecraft.

So . . it would seem that the short answer is that its not common at all.
Oh well, more money saved for future 'opportunities'!
