'ol dial oven to digital PID

in knife chat last night we briefly discussed this project......here is my recent shop addition

there has been a few of these posted in the past, just thought I'd share mine if there was any further interest on these, here's a very brief and quick w.i.p. on converting an 'ol dial temp oven I recently purchased for $120.00 to a controlled PID digital control.......

this will be my secondary oven with its only intended purpose solely for tempering......
the oven is an older model but the element and brick are both in perfect condition...the dial control a little up/down so I wanted to have better control or as best as possible on consistent temp control........

before posting any pics I'd like to pass a long a big thank you to Rudy , fellow knifemaker, he was able to answer some wiring questions and was a great help, thanks Rudy

so first off the the sacrificial oven.......

instructions ?

some new power supply wiring , wired in PID and relay for test.....
all good 13 degrees Celsius in room (that's about 57 Fahrenheit for you southern folk)

a quick test run with my forge pyrometer to varify new PID is reading proper temps and voila ! all good

my current Paragon is reading temps in Farenheit so a quick change on this PID and a test ramp to a 425F "temper" before moving on and everything is coming together as planned........

so now we'll clean up the wiring box and off to the custom paint shop (carport/garage)

now taped up and ready for a spray bomb I decided to go with Paragon blue to match big brother in the shop...

before re assembling I had to make a heat sync for the relay and new faceplate to cover up the old gauge opening.......

all re-assembled and holding its first temper spot on I'm very pleased with my new shop addition......

all in including the oven about $140 , a few spare evenings and some wiring patience

Great job Rob, probably ought to do that to the old Paragon I have that's collecting dust. Just been too busy to remember and was planning on fabbing an extension for larger blades.

thx Carl,

making yours bigger will be a bit trickier than this re and re for sure but worth it in the end I'm sure , this oven will hold up to a 13'' blade , the majority of my knives will fit easily , however anything bigger will have to go in the big brother Paragon......

Rob
I didn't make mine as pretty as yours but here are some pics.

I found a electrical box at Home Resources, and recycling center for building materials for $5 and I bought this PID, SSR, and heat sink from Amazon.com .

http://www.amazon.com/IMAGE?-SSR-25D...ilpage_o07_s00

I used the diagram, in comment 10 of the link below to wire it

http://forum.caswellplating.com/foru...hed-for-review

 photo image_4089_zpsvdm1si83.jpg

I cut out a square and put the PID and toggle switch in the door. I mounted the box to the control panel after I removed the dial and thermometer. I installed a thermocouple and fired it up.

Firing it up. It held this temperature for 20 min without fluctuating
