Lot of nice looking handles there. Now get busy and match some steel with them.

If I had a selection like that I would never sleep, cause I would be busy trying to match up steel good enough! Amazing selection

I appreciate the kind comments. I think I'm on the way to an addiction. I catch myself looking each day for new blocks that I don't already have.
I blame Ray for getting me started with this from his kindness a couple of months ago.
(They're in the yard Ray waiting for a blade
I have enough to make around 60 knives. And that doesn't include the Micarta, Mycarta, and acrylics scales I have.
Whats funny to me is that I only make 16-20 knives a year and I still keep looking for more things to stock up on.
Anyone else like this ??

I can pass on steel and guard material all day long, but seem to have issues with passing an interesting chunk of possible handle material. So....know what you mean. Have more trouble deciding on handle than any other part of knife. Sometimes I just turn the light out and reach into my materials cabinet, use the first thing my hand touches.
Best part of it is I rarely use plain-jane materials anymore.
My biggest problem is I "see" figure in standing timber, firewood splits and rough cut lumber. Then I wind up cutting the section I want out, dimensioning it out, sealing and drying. Then I forget about it and go get another piece somewhere (so it tends to pile up over time). Makes my students happy, 'cause I'm always loading them up with good material just to get the inventory down.
Yeah......I'm a handle hoarder!

This last year has been VERY nice to me !! With the research that I have been doing for the
past year with Purdue Univ. and all the support from all the Professors and research team at the
Wood Science Department, we have been able to collect SOOO much wood for our study.
I thought I would share some more of our collection;

And here is our newest additions - Woods from around the World

[IMG][/IMG]

Here is what is pictured:

Monkey Pod, Balsamo, honduran Mahagany, Granadillo, Dalbergia, Cocobola, and Goncalo Alves - Tigerwood.

Not pictured yet: Amboyna, Brown Mallee Burl, Cambodia Curley Satinwood, Sapele, African

PoolQ at #4 I am like that.

I collect knife stuff, I made knives when I worked at a machine shop and had an oven and grinders . Had a lot of D2 and O1, plus some occasional 440C and that horrible stellite (you can't grind it by hand). Have a ton of 1070, now axes. I still have about 14 blades from back then. I have some old Nicholson files, one 1/8" thick which will become the bird and trout KITH. I have wood and O1 going back to the 90s plus a few kit knives I bought at Jantz when I drove by. I prefer exotic woods for knives and have some really nice pieces. All I need now is the penile bone of a walrus, oosic.lol I don't make a lot of knives as I live in an apt. and have my grinder (1x42+8" disc) on a heavy duty cart, but I just found a 2x48 grinder with a 3/4 HP motor for $262 so I'm buying it.

Anybody work with zebra bone btw?
What is the white stuff by the way PoolQ?

Oh and I am getting better and better at leatherwork and have two more orders for purses after they looked at my sheaths. I didn't have the heart to tell them they are two totally different things, but I've made purses before. Just keep it simple and the ladies like lots of fringe and a phone pocket. It's the sewing that gets me, so I charge what I think is too much and they say OK. Women, go figure?

I expected someone to ask about those but not as quick as you noticed. Those are all Victorynox and Dexter kitchen knives. We have 17 restaurants in our chain and when
the chef's want them replaced, they give the old ones to me and I give them new ones. I use these two fold; 1) cut down 14" blades to make home paring and boning knives
2) I have been trying to figure out how to melt and remold the handles. I have one mold built but still haven't figured out the melting and pouring part. I think I will have to use virgin poly but still trying.

Or, If you are talking about the white wood - That is Ceiba Pentandra Silkwood from W. Africa

Good Luck with the leatherwork!! I have made a couple of sheaths but that is as far as I have gone.

Nice looking selection. You're gonna need more cabinets.....Saw the Vic's and Dex's right off - re-sharpened hundreds of them for professional meatcutters (both brothers were in that profession). Great for repurposing to kitchen duty. Tore the plastic off all the white ones and rehandled with rosewood or C'bola. Sumpin 'bout white plastic I can't stand.

JM, you're gonna have to break out of that apt someday so you can have a proper shop to pile things up in.

Yeh.....I say I replaced my old (harfull) addiction with a knifemaking addiction, handle material plays a big part in that. I have over 50 pairs of dymond wood....when I realized people were running out of it because the factory burned down I picked up 50pairs in a second, then between micarta g10 carbon fiber and wood scales maybe another 100 pairs. probilly 25-30 wood blocks, and maybe 20 large sheets of random stuff g10 micarts.....so I think I am good for a while. but when I go to one of the supply sites to order other stuff that "handle materials" page seems to call me I have to look and then if there is something unique its VERY hard to pass up..... very addicting hobby overall but I am glad I am not the only person that has more handle material than is needed right now....maybe its like money there is never any "EXTRA" money.....can there be "EXTRA" handle material???

There's no such thing as extra money, but my wife thinks differently about dusty chunks of wood, bone, antler, horn, and rusty steel. Of course I take every op to remind her that the meal she's eating taste just as good as what we bought from a regular paycheck years ago....always get a tough look while that sinks in.
Guilty as charged.
