What is the difference in a Switchlade knife and an Automatic?

I believe if you are military, a police officer, or part of an emergency medical unit, it's an automatic.

But if you're an average "Joe Citizen", it's a switchblade. :

I think it's like the difference between *whiskers* and a beard. According to George Carlin, loveable cowboy sidekick Gabby Hayes had *whiskers* ...

But Soviet leader Vladimir Ilyich Lenin had a beard.

Yup, Terry, that's right. Unfortunately, whenever I refer to some of my Custom knives to non-knife people, I'm always using the term: 'automatic'--to which they return back: "Switchblade". It has a negative connotation to it.

OK--what's the etymology of the word 'switchblade'? How long has this been in the knife lexicon? Having asked that, when did the term 'automatic' come forth?

See what you started?

It all depends on where you get them.

You can get a switchblade in Mexico for $5. You can get an automatic from a custom knifemaker for $500.00

Just be careful where you shop, the prices and names usually drfine the quality.

Two different names for the same thing, although "switchblade" is more associated with the Italian stiletto look and cheaper knives and "automatic" is synonomous with more expensive production and custom pieces.

Hi Dakee,

I know your new here. This is the custom knife directory.

As such your post about the POS Automatics you found on Ebay are not appropriate here.

In the future please keep your posts to custom knives only.
