120 grit works good for roughing.
200-300 for semi finishing.
400 for a nice satin finish then 600 -200 for hand rub depending on the material you are finishing.
Carbon fiber finishs best (tacky finish) at 400-600.
Ivory, pearl , bone, etc up to about 2000.
The bolster and frame 400-600 satin finish works great.
After sanding 600 you can use a buffer and compound to get a mirror finish.

Thanks for the feedback.

Any brands in particular to use/stay away from.

I assume you get what you pay for?. The cheaper it is the quicker it wears out of is not spliced together properly?

Ed,
Most belts that I have seen in the 1 x42 work well.
They all last about the same.
The kalamazoo runs at a slower speed so high end belts are not really needed.

Darrel.
