1st knife. DDR2
Hi all. Just finished my first knife and thought I would share it with you.
My kind lady bought me this DDR2 and a DDR3-BL for Christmas from Knife Kits. It has cocobolo scales with a 600 grit satin finish blade and bolsters. I haven't done anything clever with it as it's my first attempt just tried to concentrate on fit and finish. Made a complete pigs ear of removing the thumbstud hence only one fitted, actually I think I prefer this to two studs. All the work was done with hand tools and a Dremel. The DDR2 is a great little knife and I'm really pleased with it. Congratulation to all involved in designing and supplying a kit that can be made by a complete novice yet still give you something usefull and attractive at the end. Thanks for looking. Rob |

Good work!
You're hooked. Doing this nice of a job on your first will only make you want the next one...
My first was the DDR2 also. Nearly 30 kits later..... Coop __________________ Jim Cooper - Capturing the Artistry and Significance of Handmade Knives ?? New website improvement for 2010 - Over 5000 images searchable by maker's name! ?? |

Nice and clean. Great job!
Nice transition on the bevel from hard edge bolster to round edge handle! |

I used CCL Knife Handle Oil from Brisa but I'm not very happy with the finish at the moment (my workmanship not the product). I tried to leave some of the deep grain on the wood to keep a natural look but it just doesn't look right when polished, so I have taken the scales off and I'm sanding them a bit smoother. What do you guy's recommend for finishing cocobolo wood? |

Cocobolo is pretty oily wood and doesn't need a lot to make it look good. When you do your finish sanding (i.e., with the finest grit sandpaper), wet it with your oil before you sand. When you wipe it off, you'll be done. It's less messy than dry sanding and will leave you with a really nice looking surface.
