I've been out traveling. I'll be out again the first half of this week, but back on Wed. I got permission from my "boss" so we're on for this weekend.

Next Sat, Jan 24th, I'm hosting another small hammer-in here in Katy, TX. This will be damascus/patternwelding all day. With the usual number of participants (5-7), everyone should be able to go home with a small billet of damascus and a brain full of knowledge.:jdwink2:

I have cable for cable damascus and high carbon sheet metal for twist or low layer count random pattern.

10-11:30 am will be metal selection/prep
11:30-12 billet prep
12-5 welding/hammering

Email or PM me for more info and/or directions if you'd like to come.

Don,
My new addy is:
24334 Travis House Ln
Katy, TX 77493

I need to renew my membership as well, so I'll update it on the TKCA pages when I do that.

Gotcha. Don't forget to update your address with Zane Blackwell too. He prints out the address stickers for me.

Here's some of the pics:

First pic is all the residual crud burining off the cable. These were boiled in a degreaser after being taken apart then reassembled and tack welded on the ends. It still had old grease in it. Grease burns out, but you have to make sure and get any grit and solid crud out or it will result in inclusions in the steel.

Here's some of the first welding passes. This originally was 2" double improved cable. It was very stiff under the hammer, even at yellow heats. Next time I think I'll use 1.5" cable!

Be very liberal with the flux when welding up cable. This combines with the crud and floats it out, but you hve to have enough to "flow" in all the recesses of the billet.

Wire brush off all the fluxed crud , then reflux, reheat and hammer-weld it up.

John from Cypress hammering up one of the billets.

Manipulating the final billet into a knife blank.

It went a lot easier with two people working the billet.

Stanley and Andy posing with a welded wire billet and a drwan out one. A helluva lot of elbow grease between the two steps!!!

I uploaded some youtube video as well, but several seem to keep crashing when I upload them. They're at www.youtube.com/kragaxe.

Nice job Stanley!

I made a small fighter blade, but haven't had a chance to heat treat and finish out the knife.

I joked about "Kragistan" at the hammer-In....well, I might be heading to the Uzbek/Tajik/Kyrg region of the FSU this Summer.

Hmm...I comment about having another kid and whammo, I joke about the FSU and now I might be going....I need to start discussing the lottery!

Nice knife Chris! I really like the contrast in the blade pattern with the ivory handle. Where did you get the croc skin? Do I even want to know how much CITES red tape there is for Nile Crocodile products?
