New hunting hatchets in the works
Forged a batch of hunting hatchets a couple of weeks ago, but classes kept me from working on them. Forged out a total of 8.......5 are "W" pattern with 1080 "bits", and 3 are mild steel bodies with 1080 "bits". All are fairly small in size.....and should fit nicely into a day/hunting pack.
Here's a close up of a couple of the Damascus ones..... After Church yesterday I just couldn't stand it any longer....... I finished out one of the damascus heads, gave it a coat of clear Gun-Kote, and put a gave it a nice Bocote Burl handle. Now I've gotta track down some Ash or Hickory for handles for the "plain" ones....which should be a trick here in Montana.....since either is considered "exotic hardwood" around here! __________________ WWW.CAFFREYKNIVES.NET Caffreyknives@gmail.com "Every CHOICE has a CONSEQUENCE, and all your CONSEQUENCES are a result of your CHOICES." I hear ya Brother!!! We're making a trip back to KY/IN next month.....part of the trip is picking up new oak ties for my air hammer, and I'm hoping to get my hands on some rough cut Ash and Hickory too! Figure if I'm gona pull the trailer all that way, it might as well come home loaded with something good!

Ed that is one very well constructed and beautiful hunter's hatchet. You will not have any problem selling that one and the customer will be very happy on getting it.

I've been using it for about a year now, and have had great results. It all began when I was looking for a way to preserve the finish on my 416/Mosaic laminate blades.....that finish is so fragile that rubbing it with flitz will wreck it. I made myself a hunter of that material and coated it with clear Gun Kote....then put it through a Montana hunting season......it came through without a scratch. So I started using it on other blades.
I found that the "trick" with any of the Gun Kote products is to apply LIGHTLY (if you can see a sheen or a "wet" look, you've over applied it) with an airbrush (I use the Harbor Freight cheapies) and once the finish is baked on, allow it to FULLY cool naturally, before messing with it. After that, it's like it becomes part of the blade....very tough and durable. __________________ WWW.CAFFREYKNIVES.NET Caffreyknives@gmail.com "Every CHOICE has a CONSEQUENCE, and all your CONSEQUENCES are a result of your CHOICES." |

Those are fantastic Ed. I would imagine that those will be wildly popular.
