heat treating/tempering


Where can I find instructions for heat treating and tempering O-1 and ATS-34 Steel? Thanks

Heat treat instructions


You can also find basic instructions on how to heat treat any steel that the major knife maker supply houses sells in the supplier's catalogue. In particular, I'm thinking of Sheffields, Jantx, and K&G, and probably Texas Knifemakers...

ATS34 is a steel that requirers having a heat treating oven. Normally the steel is brought up to 1900 to 1950 and held at that temp for 12 to 15 minutes for 3/16 and less time for thinner material. It is a air quenching steel. Let it cool to the touch and then two times for two hours at say 400 to give you a 58Rc. O-1 is pretty simple bring up to non-magnitic and quench in oil and then draw 350 twice for an hour. This is all right off the top of my head but should get you in the ball park. The other Ray mentioned checking K&G, Texas Knife Makers all should have information on ATS but not sure about O-1. Ray
