Help!!!! Broken Tang

Hi all,

I was doing some touch up with my first knife this weekend, I was cleaning the area just behind the ricasso up and before you know I had taken off most of the tang for a hidden tang knife and I am using 10XX steel. I have about 1/2 inch of my tang left my question is can it be repaired. All I have aroung the shop for solder is easy solder will silver brazing hold this adequately. Thx in advance.

Will it be a rabbit tang or a thru tang? A lap joint with a pin might be better for a thru tang. If you butt solderjoint it for a rabbit, make sure it has some solid handle material around the joint and maybe put a thu pin above the joint..... it might be alright. Finishing it and testing it will be a good learning experience.

Do you have enough mass left to thread what is left of the tang? If so, you can thread it and use a threaded coller and a piece of all thread. If not, Id go with Roc's suggestion and pin a piece to it, Ive had luck with cutting a slot into a piece of all thread, or brass rod, and then pin thru it. Seems to be a good solid joint. Good luck!

God Bless
Mike

I guess I'm not really sure what you mean.

1) Do you have only 1/2inch long left of the tang to sit inside the handle ?

2) Or do you mean that you ground the tang narrower and narrower until the tang is only 1/2inch wide (but maybe have a few inches of length to sit inside the handle ?

If it is the previous (1), then the previous responses may help.

If it is (2) then 1/2inch wide tang may be strong enough depending on how big your overall blade is, and its intended use. On many factory made knives the tang is really quite narrow and "flimsy" and will still put up with a lot of abuse. Fact is, even mild steel is pretty strong at 1/2inch wide.

It might be best to include a photo of what the knife looks like, for a more specific response. Hope this helps. Jason.
