mini propane forge
I am building a "mini"/ bean can forge, with the small propane bottle. My consern from looking at the photos is the torch tip sticking into the forge/insulation. If the burner tip is in the forge does it not get dangerously hot. If it is not in the forge does the flame go in enough to heat it? I do not have a feel for how far it should go in, besides not to much but just right, and do not want to blow myself up before I get to make a knife. Can you give me some direction please?
As a after thought is such a setup hot enougt to heat 01 for heat treating? Cheers Ron. |

I asked that same question myself just yesterday concerning a full sized forge I am making. The answer I received was that the tip of the burner (your torch) should go into the wool but not into the heat chamber. The fire burns in front of the burner and the wool should protect it well enough.
If the steel gets to non-magnetic then you can heat treat it. A One-Brick forge witha propane torch can do it so I would think your Bean-Can should also do it.... |
