Laminates...?
I've been thinking about making a laminated blade. Cable damascus on the outside and O1 or 1095 on the inside.
Do you guys think this will work? I've been doing a bunch of research and have yet to find an instance where cable damascus is used. I'm curious to know what you guys think. (I'm not really sure where to post this, so I double posted it. One here and one in the "Damascus Forum") Chris Nilluka |

I see no reason why it wouldn't work. I think the reason you don't see it very often is that cable damascus (assuming good cable) makes an excellent edge material all on it's own.

I did a lot of that years ago......it works very well, provided you find the right cable for the overlays. I liked using the lower end cable (less carbon content), because the XX improved stuff would tend to delaminate during hardening.....right at the thin edges where it joined the high carbon core. I eventually quit using cable all together simply because I would always find a tiny flaw somewhere in it when welded........just didn't like that.

Laminated blades usually have a hard steel core and softer steel covering .You could make any type of damascus and cover an 0-1 core. I,ve seen many good examples. I have some fancy Shun kitchen knives , all stainless ,damascus covering a VG-10 core ,an excellent knife. I would use cable for non damascus blades.

The reason I'm wanting to use cable is two fold...
One reason is the one that Ed mentioned, it has small voids and blemishes in it. I too do not like that fact. So, for the cutting edge I would like a solid center. The other reason, I love the look of cable damascus. I love the semi-random firey effect it gets. I think that would look really sweet in a laminated blade. Do you think it would be a good idea to mabe put another layer inbetween the center and outers? Like maybe 15 N 20? Or, would that not really make any difference in adhesion? Chris Nilluka |
