slip joint spring question

Looking at the construction of a slip joint there are two basic choices for creating the tension on the spring. You can have a thick spring and place the center peened point farther away from the pivot/locking point, or you can have the peen point closer to the pivot but have a thinner spring. Is there a definite preference as to which is better.

Thanks
Steve

Hi, Steve. I always used a thicker spring behind the pivot pin in order to provide lots of meat for pins. I thinned the inside of the spring from the front of the pivot pin to the tang of the blade.
