New carving set
This turned out to be my "Magnum Opus" - unintentionally. I had been asked to make a carving set for Christmas back in June, and I promised to get on it as soon as I returned from England in September - I've been at it ever since! Three months (or about 150 hours) later, here it is: the knife is 440C stock removal, HT by yours truly, the fork is forged from 440C, the sharpening steel is scavenged and has been fitted with a new handle. The wood is cocobolo, with black marble and stainless spacers. The ferrules and pommel nuts are 316 stainless. The box is Brazilian Blackwood with maple inlay. I made the clasp from a piece of steel with a catch set into the bottom half of the box. It works well to keep the box closed. PHEW! I'm glad to see this one go!!
Thanks for looking at my work! As always, Chris [IMG][/IMG] [IMG][/IMG] [IMG][/IMG] __________________ Chris K. Two Mountains Forge Delta, BC, Canada www.twomountainsforge.com |

Somebody has to love that! Did you turn that fork on a lathe or sand/file it into that shape?

That is a beautiful set. Very elegant and high end looking. I'm sure the new owner will be thrilled.

Thanks, guys. Ray, it's a combination of both. I forged the tines (tynes?), and finished the tip by hand. I then turned the shaft and again finished by hand using v-files and paper to get the burrs out. My little lathe doesn't do a very good job of smooth turning, but it gets the rough shape done.
