Anyone for a new kith?

So been getting in to knife making them came across the KITH threads and love the idea. Little scared my work wont be up to par or disappointing but would love to participate none the less. Anyone else interested in getting one going also?

I might be interested in something simple. Perhaps a necker or something skeletonized--just ideas.

It'll all be determined by the theme and the time frame. I'm building a mahogany boat right now, so time is short.

Someone needs to take the riegns though.

As far as suggestions, I think it'd be cool to make a "neck knife" KITH.

I think that's give a pretty specific parameter while still being broad enough that everyone could participate.

Rules could be something like:
Must be able to wear finished product comforably around neck.
Finished knife must be a usable heat treated steel
Must have sheath
Made from scratch (no pre-made blanks or kits)

etc...

I mean, it doesn't have to get too complicated. Might specify a minimum or maximum length?

I second (or third) the neck knife idea.

These rules also look good. I would say specifically state under "made from scratch" that knives can be either forged or stock removal, just not kits, etc.

I think we should also add to the rules that everyone must post at least a few WIP pics. That will help generate more discussion along to way and will also provide the opportunity for more experienced makers to pass on tips/advice to newer makers as we do this.

We also need a rule to describe how the knife trade will work. Something such as names will be drawn from a hat to make a list, each person sends his knife to the name below his on the list, and the bottom name sends to the top name.

How much time do we want for this?
Tony

Excellent ideas Tony.

I like the list making idea, as that still keeps it random, but systematic and fair as well.
As for time, I think we need a deadline for entries/participants, as well as a deadline for making the knife.

That way there's time to compile the list of makers before all of the knives are finished without having to make adjustments for add ons in the end. Also, it will make sure that the late comers have adequate time to finish a blade without having to back out for lack of time. (Theoretically anyway.)

As for deadlines for entry, I'm fine with even a month or two, and the finished product required in 4 or 5 months? I think that's plenty of time for weekend knifemakers with full time jobs to nibble away at a knife, order materials, send out and return for heat treat, etc... and not feel too rushed to put out a knife.

That, and it may even give some of the newest makers time to hone their skills (no pun intended) and make a couple of practice knives if needed....

As long as everyone is fine with the necker idea, I say we solidify the deadlines, the rules, and try to get a main thread posted so we can start getting participants!

I thought you had the reins cbr. But if not, and nobody else wants it, I'll do it.

Don't worry that you've never made a necker before. It can just be a smaller version of whatever you like. And there will be plenty of help along the way. That's why I suggested that we make posting some WIP pics one of the rules. This will be a great opportunity for us to all put up pics of what we are doing, have lots of back and forth discussion, and all learn from each other. BTW, all the way back to your first post, don't worry that your knife might be disappointing - I can assure you that whoever receives your knife will not complain. Everyone who signs up to participate knows fully well that there are newbies in the KITH and will be happy to get a newbie knife if that's the way the draw works out. Besides that, as someone suggested earlier, we will set the time line long enough to let you make a couple of practice knives if you want to do so.
