I have used a Woodruff keyway cutter and also a slotting saw. Another common way is to use a fly cutter which gives you the 'cresent moon' traditional type of nail nick. All these tools require a mill.
With a steady hand you could use a Dremel and an abrasive wheel, I suppose .... |

I guess I'll have to go with the dremel, because I don't have a mill.. not that succesful yet. Thanks Ray-

What I use, granted I have not done alot of nail knicks, I use the cut-off wheel and my drill press. Put the blade in a drill press vise. Put the cut-off wheel and aubor in the chuck. Then you can ease the blade into the wheel. This is really good if you want to make a longer knick.Paul

nail nick
I only put nail nicks in spring-back folders and then I use a fly-cutter grond to shape and this gives me a nice cresent shaped nick. However there are more than one way to skin a cat, use whatever works for you.

Hey, Paul. I used your method yesterday on my slipjoint. It worked pretty slick! I found that by moving the drill press table up minutely, I could make a crescent Moon shaped nick. I'll probably use that from now on. I'm wondering if you could find a grinding stone just the shape to do this? I'm gonna keep my my eyes peeled.

nail nick
For you guys with no mill. I've found some extra thick cut off wheels (.062 x 1-1/8 ) They do a very professional job putting a nail nick in a blade before or after heat treat. Put a bevel on the edge of the disc and you can make a very nice crescent to you nail nick. You do need a dremel tool though.
With very little practice you can make deep crescent cuts or very long cuts. Ken 800 972 1192 __________________ K&G |
