That is a nice description and really helpful, Ed. Thank you for doing it.
Only one question... hardness you are looking for in tempering. OK, two... what size square stock do you like to use? Thanks again... Mike |

Anvils vary a bit on the face hardness, so to be safe, I like to have the hammer hardness in the low 50s on the Rc scale.
Stock size will depend on the desired end size of the hammer, I use everything from 1 1/4" to 2 1/2" stock. __________________ WWW.CAFFREYKNIVES.NET Caffreyknives@gmail.com "Every CHOICE has a CONSEQUENCE, and all your CONSEQUENCES are a result of your CHOICES." |

Ed,
Thanks again... Would you relate the sizes of stock with the weights of hammers you get out of those sizes of square stock? I understand variations in length between faces could make a lot of difference in weight for the same size starting stock. I guess I'm meaning for the hammer design proportions you feel are right.
