Heat Treat Oven Question
Thanks in advance guys,...
I guess my main question is what's the temp oven I need that will cover the majority of knife making steels, 2000 or 2350 What should my priorities be when shopping for an oven ? Its seems 220 is the way to go for speed and efficiency I don't know if I will ever have the need for anything over 14" deep but those who have a 14" wish they had an 18" and those with 18" desire a 24" I'd like to keep it under 2K or under but not limited to I'm looking at the paragons Any advice is appreciated Thanks |

I've been using an old ceramic kiln I got off craigslist. It's bigger than optimum and you have more oxygen to deal with inside the bigger enclosure, but for $200, it works for me. I've tried stainless foil, adding lumps of charcoal to consume the oxygen, and a wash of satanite to combat oxidation of the steel. So far the foil seems to work best, but kinda pricey. Keep thinking of rigging up a CO2 or argon system to purge the atomosphere inside, but have been too lazy.

Only one choice......Paragon. I've owned several different brands, but none will match the quality, control, and customer service of paragon.
Most recently I purchased a 14"/220v model through USA Knifemaker Supply. Temp wise, you're likely never going to need beyond 1950F.....but all the paragons are now rated to 2400F. __________________ WWW.CAFFREYKNIVES.NET Caffreyknives@gmail.com "Every CHOICE has a CONSEQUENCE, and all your CONSEQUENCES are a result of your CHOICES." |

I've also been trying to figure out which oven to buy. I've decided on some sort of 220 volt Paragon. Now I'm trying to determine whether the ability to program is worth the money to me. I'm strictly a hobbyist with little free time, so I'm considering Paragon's "Knife Dogs" oven available thru USA Knifemaker's Supply. Its alot cheaper, but you can't program it at all.
Ed, Why did you decide on a 14 inch oven in 220 volts as opposed to a KM24D? Is its price comparable to the 110 volt KM14D? If so, it seems like that would be a good option for me. Are replacement coils readily available for it? How do you like it so far? Thanks for your time - John |
