New Forging Press
Ed,
On the way home from Blade West I started thinking about the forging press parts and pieces. This morning I decided to get started. Attached a few pictures of todays work. I will keep you up to date. By the way thanks for answering all my dumb questions at the show. Attachment 8298 Main beam and mounting eyes Attachment 8299 Slide loose fit on beam Attachment 8300 Hyd cylinder on beam and stood up. I decided to mount the cylinder to press up. I have a low ceiling in my shop not enough head room. Bing MLazyB Custom Knives Last edited by MLAZYB; 11-21-2008 at 05:34 PM. |

Thanks Ed for the wild man thing. Now I'm getting all wild about forging some damascus. That little I did last winter just was a tease to draw me in. Thanks for all the help. The Basic Damascus video reveals more info every time I review it.
I was a little under the weather yesterday. So all I was able to get done power unit and valve mounted. All that is really left to do is the hoses / paint / wire up to electrical. Here is a couple more pics. ( Still can't take a good picture) Attachment 8307 Attachment 8308 Bing MLazyB Custom Knives Last edited by MLAZYB; 11-21-2008 at 05:34 PM. |

Bing,
Don't forget the custom paint job and the racing stripes/flames! Maybe even a custom decal that says "Bing's Basher"! It looks really good. Keep us posted! __________________ WWW.CAFFREYKNIVES.NET Caffreyknives@gmail.com "Every CHOICE has a CONSEQUENCE, and all your CONSEQUENCES are a result of your CHOICES." |

That looks good so far but I would suggest welding some half inch plate in parallel to the web as far out as you can get and still clear your slide. That is unless you like making parallelograms.

OK Ed, "Bings Basher" I been laughing so hard that my ribs hurt!! Where do you get the ideas for names anyway? Heck I can't even think of names for knives.
Bill, Thanks I'll add the suport you suggested. Good idea and good insurance. We cannot over build these things. I had some good experience last winter with a weak unit. Dana, Thanks, It was so good to meet you and your wife at the Blade West show. I can see we will be sharing ideas for a long time. The hyd cylinder is 6" bore with 8" stroke. Let me know if you need help when your ready to build your press. Thanks everyone Bing MLazyB Custom Knives On kind of a sour note the Doc decided today that I will be out of comission for a few weeks. Nothing serious just that working in the shop is not going to fly. So I guess that the Flames on the Press are going to have to wait Ed. |

Holly Crap!!!!!!!!
You did all that in 2 days???? No wonder the doc is putting you down for a while. That looks awesome!! Now you will be wondering where all the days slip away to. You will go out to the shop in the morning to start making Damascus. All of a sudden you will look up at the clock and realize you have been out there for twelve hours. How could that possibly happen??? Steel insanity is how!!! Good Luck and make sure to have fun!!! Steve Kelly ABS J.S. __________________ Steven Kelly A.B.S. J.S. S.K. Knives 11407 Spotted Fawn Ln. Back in shop working on press
Ok we are back to work now. The Doc said if I take it easy I could go back to work. The paying job is too easy. So I decided to finish up the press and try it out. Except painting ( next weekend).
Any way I have a few more pics. Thanks Ed and everyone for the ideas and help. Bing MLazyB Custom Knives Attachment 8357 First Weld Attachment 8358 Drawing out Attachment 8359 Flatening Attachment 8360 Drop off of first billet Last edited by MLAZYB; 11-21-2008 at 05:34 PM. |

Well, it looks like for the foreseeable future you'll be known as Bing...The Wild Man! Congrats! It looks to me like the design is working out great, and the steel certainly is looking good. __________________ WWW.CAFFREYKNIVES.NET Caffreyknives@gmail.com "Every CHOICE has a CONSEQUENCE, and all your CONSEQUENCES are a result of your CHOICES." |

Ventilation
Couldn't help but notice the garage door was closed and there is a forge running somewhere close to that new press. You are probably ahead of me but I want to caution you just in case that be sure you have enough ventilation.
What size cylinder are you using? __________________ plain ol Bill |

cant help but notice that one hose is bellow the billet just waiting to have a hot piece of slag fall off? Is this a concern or is there soemthing to that hose that makes it impervious to a hole being melted into it? otherwise looks real nice and nice billet.

Ed,
I now know what I have been missing out on. You are right it does kind of feel like cheating. Thanks again for all your help and encouragement. I know I would not have got to this point without all that you have to offer. Bill, We opened a walk thru door about 6 feet away from the press. The rain was blowing in under the garage door so I shut it and open the walk thru. The cylinder is 6" bore with 8" stroke. Shane, Call when you are ready to build or if you like just drive over one weekend. I believe it is about 6 to 7 hrs from Vernal. Jon, The forge is a piece of 8" sch 20 pipe 24" long with ceramic blanket coated with ITC 100 refractory coating. 135CFM blower with inlet for burner offset center. I can work a 16" piece fairly easy. Never tried anything longer. Thanks Everyone On to the next journey Bing MLazyB Custom Knives |
