Bluing furniture

I decided to try to do some bluing the traditional way, especially after reading some not so glowing reviews of some Birchwood-Casey products. I did a test piece from a failed guard element that was forged from rebar. I put it in a jar with some Aqua Regia with the guard element held above the acid with some glass beads so that it was only exposed to the fumes. I left it in the jar for about 7-10 days (sorry, lost count) until it formed a strong patina, occasionally removing it to scrub lightly with 0000 steel wool to remove the loose stuff. I then boiled it in a tannic acid solution until it developed a black patina followed by boiling in a baking soda bath to neutralize the acids. It looks strong and even. How durable is bluing by this method? Not quite as traditional as peeing on the knife to brown it then boiling in an infusion made from oak bark to blue it but it looks great.

Doug

I blue most of my high carbon knives; I blue them five time then wipe them down with 3 in 1 oil before shipping. They hold up good, I keep getting request for more from long time customers.

That's a tough one Doug.....so many variables to contend with. It's funny you bring this up....on Friday I got a new product in from Brownells......it's Gun Kote, but what intrigued me about this one is that the color is call "Gloss Gunmetal Blue". The Gun Kote and Baking Lacquers are about the "toughest" type finishes I've found, and I just finished coating a scrap piece of feather pattern with the Gunmetal Blue color.....once it dries, I'll finish the process by baking it, and will take some pics and post them. I'm kind of excited about it, because it's the closest thing I've seen to a good blue/black finish that you see on higher end custom guns. More to come!
