Acid etching color fill?

Will etching go deep enough to do color fill? Were you fill the etched away steel with paint?

Like the colored lettering on this? I know this is stamped or engraved but would it be possible to achieve the same effect with etching?

Sure.

Some guys do that to damascus. They do a deep etch, spray paint with Krylon, and sand it lightly to get an even surface with super high contrast.

You can certainly etch deep enough to fill with paint. I'm learning to etch and going too deep has been an issue. Go to http://erniesknives.com/default.html for etching tutorials. You most definitely can etch deep.
