Smithsonian Musuem
Hey guys,
I'm planning a trip in to Washington sometime next month to visit, among other things, the Smithsonian. I've never been to the Smithsonian, and of course the first thing I want to know is what kind of weapons I can see there . . . yes, I do have a one-track mind. Any of y'all ever been or have any advice so that I don't get lost in there? I went to England last year and to the British musuem without any help and didn't see hardly any knives or swords. Of course, the week I was there the Sutton Hoo exhibit was closed But anyway, I thought this time I'd be a little bit better prepared. Let me know if y'all have any suggestions of what I should see. Thanks! Josh |

I grew up just outside DC...
I can't think of any place to see weapons except for the museums of Asian and African history which are pretty much right on the Mall. There might be a travelling exhibit of some kind, as when the Viking exhibit was at the Museum of Natural History... The Museum of American Craft ( the Renwick, close to the White House,) has exactly one knife in their collection and seems to have an aversion to obtaining more or recognizing knives as legitimate craft. For cool knives & swords I'm afraid you have to go to the Met in NYC or the Higgins in Worcester Mass... |

drop me a line
Let me know when you plan on coming up, and we'll see if we can light the fire. I'm just south of the beltway, and after several weeks of cold forge syndrome, I need an excuse to light up again.

Jon,
Thanks for the info. At least I won't wander around all weekend and think I still missed all the good stuff. Prizzim, Thanks for the invite! Unfortunately, I'm not sure I'll have any spare time. I'm traveling with several friends as well as some of my family and I won't have a seperate vehicle. Otherwise I'd love to do a little bit of forging. Again, I appreciate the invitation anyway. Thanks! Josh |

Josh don't know your itinerary but The National Firearms Museum is in Fairfax, VA right near DC. They have swords and knifes and such as well as firearms.
Here's a link for direction and hours - there is an online tour link from this one. http://www.nrahq.org/museum/directions.asp __________________ Chuck Burrows Hand Crafted Leather & Frontier Knives dba Wild Rose Trading Co Durango, CO chuck@wrtcleather.com www.wrtcleather.com The beautiful sheaths created for storing the knife elevate the knife one step higher. National Knife Museum---
This splendid museum in Chattanooga, Tennessee is seeking a new home in downtown Chattanooga and is temporarily closed at this time. When it reopens it would be a "must see!" Sandy
