Try soaking the knife in WD-40 overnight and then using fine steel-wool to remove the rust. This should remove most of it if the blade is not badly pitted. Then I would recommend taking a metal knife polish and using that to further clean up the blade. I use Metal-Glow to clean my blades, and it also works nice on the scales and bolsters. Use a good knife lube such as White-Lightning on the pivot. 3-in-1 oil works nicely also, but be sure to clean all of the excess off so you don't get it on your clothes when carrying the knife. Hope this helps. -chris

What kind of steel, where is the rust, how much?

Light rust, I use one of the commercially available metal polishes. Simichrome is what I typically use or one of the stainless steel cleaners sold through the appliance retailers. Keep in mind that some of these polishes have mild abrasives so you may leave swirl marks if rubbed on softer materials. Flitz does not have abrasives and after cleaning, it will leave a protective finish.

Renissance wax, silicone cloths...but you stated this is a carry piece...I just keep mine dry and that works in So. Cal.
